Q&A: How is #SASpine utilizing telemedicine to help during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Virtual telemedicine is a valuable asset because we’re able to use computers and phones with video conferencing capabilities to bring timely, effective care to them in the safety and comfort of patients’ homes, avoiding any additional risk of exposure to COVID-19 or any other communicable disease. Patients don’t have to go out into the public or into facilities where other potentially infected patients are. It is safer for them and safer for our staff. In our profession, it’s not wise to be unavailable when patients need us. The amazing thing about this new means of delivering care is that it allows us to see patients while we communicate, share X-ray, MRI, and CT and study results, and counsel them about their issues. A lot of our time, even in the clinic, involves discussions with and educating our patients. We can do that very effectively by utilizing telemedicine.
We deal with complex, sometimes, life-altering or threatening issues and so we have to be available at all times. We are excited about this new means of communicating. It is likely to continue to be an option in our practice, even when life gets back to normal. Please contact us and request a telemedicine visit if you need to discuss any spine-related issues. As always, in the event of an emergency call 911. ~Dr Cyr
